The long running dispute over the ISKCON Bengaluru temple is once again heading back to the Supreme Court as the bench prepares to hear a review petition on January 22. This development has sparked fresh interest across the country because the case has been active for more than two decades and has seen multiple twists involving questions of ownership, administration and the true origin of the Bengaluru unit. The review plea filed by ISKCON India challenges the court’s earlier ruling that recognised the Bengaluru chapter as an independent society rather than a branch of the original Mumbai registered organisation.
Earlier this year the Supreme Court delivered a landmark verdict that handed control of the famous temple to ISKCON Bengaluru. That ruling overturned a previous judgment by the Karnataka High Court which had sided with ISKCON Mumbai. With the new plea, ISKCON India argues that important historical records and foundational documents were not given proper weight and that the court must re examine the legal status of the Bengaluru society. This move has opened the possibility of the entire debate being revisited from the beginning.
The upcoming hearing is expected to address both procedural and substantive questions. The court will first consider whether its earlier decision can be reviewed and then evaluate the concerns raised in the petition. The outcome could influence how religious organisations with multiple branches across India govern their properties and structure their administration. The ISKCON network is large and influential, and the final decision will have implications beyond this single temple.
For devotees and followers the dispute is emotionally charged because the temple in Bengaluru is not just a spiritual centre but a cultural landmark that welcomes millions of visitors every year. The review hearing offers a chance to resolve questions that have lingered for decades and to bring clarity to the organisation’s governance in a way that aligns with law and tradition.
