The Delhi High Court is currently reviewing the issue of mandatory vegetarian and non vegetarian labelling on toothpaste and similar personal care products. The matter arises from a challenge by Reckitt Benckiser India against the Legal Metrology rules which require the use of green and red dots to indicate vegetarian and non vegetarian products respectively. The company argues that such labelling should not be mandatory for products like toothpaste.
The court noted a conflict between regulatory authorities. The Legal Metrology authority maintains that the labelling is compulsory, while the Drug Technical Advisory Board has recommended that it remain voluntary. To resolve this, the court has directed the regulators to meet and arrive at a joint decision on whether the labelling should be mandatory or optional for manufacturers.
