DGCA Issues Urgent Safety Order for Immediate Modification on Airbus A320 Aircraft

India’s aviation regulator has taken swift action after safety alerts emerged from global aviation networks regarding a critical issue found in Airbus A320 family aircraft. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has directed all Indian airlines operating A318 A319 A320 and A321 aircraft to carry out an urgent modification before allowing the affected jets to fly. This move follows reports of an unexpected pitch down incident on an A320 caused by a malfunction linked to the flight control system. Airbus later confirmed that the aircraft’s electronic elevator and aileron computer required a mandatory update to prevent such anomalies from recurring.

In response the DGCA issued an Airworthiness Directive ordering airlines to immediately ground any aircraft that has not completed the required inspection and software or hardware updates. With hundreds of A320 family aircraft in active service in India the directive has triggered a large scale operational effort among major carriers. IndiGo Air India and other operators have already begun the modification process and a significant number of jets have been cleared to return to service after passing the mandated safety checks.

This precautionary grounding is expected to cause slight disruptions to flight schedules across the country. Passengers may experience rescheduling or minor delays as airlines rotate their available fleet until all planes receive the necessary updates. Despite the inconvenience the DGCA and airlines emphasise that safety remains the highest priority and all actions being taken are to safeguard passengers crews and aircraft systems.
